Artist Statement
I stood at bank’s edge and watched shallow waters wrinkle a clear skin over an arched stone with imperfections. Each rise and ripple stretched shadow and light downstream like drawn lines marking a fluent path.
With illusionary grace, veins of shadowy light flowed from a world of cause and effect and entered my mind as perceived line. Nature’s calligraphy freely winds, before human senses eddy in perception and then script
a point of view.
To understand and navigate this world, we humans consistently engage in the beautiful act of creating with mind and body.
My art pursues a clearer awareness of this creative process and ponders where art begins and ends. Inspired by relationships in nature producing growth, anatomy, and consciousness. I often begin works with expressive marks as I refine certain gestures with details while leaving others raw.
I look into layers of lines made and excavate shapes lingering under my thicket of strokes and render hidden forms to the foreground. It is a sort of patient wandering, like searching for a bird in the brush, a space where harmony and disorder meet and I strive to unite a composition out of this contrast.
This approach allows unscripted lines to surface and reflect my outer and inner environments. Endowing the flow of an artwork’s evolution with variance, chance, heredity and environmental influence, likening its growth to ways an organism ripens into being.
